The Brits are right at the side of Comrade Obama in creating an authoritarian state.

The Conservative Party government of Britain has spent over $8 million on monitoring the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where Julian Assange has been holed up for 20 months. His stay is having a knock-on effect on British taxpayers, reportedly costing them over $16,000 a day.

In response to a Freedom of Information request filed by the Huffington Post UK, the London Metropolitan Police revealed the financial consequences of Assange’s stay in the Ecuadorian Embassy. The WikiLeaks founder entered the Embassy in June 2012 in a desperate plea to avoid his extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over accusations of sexual assault reports RT News.

London Police have maintained round-the-clock surveillance on the Ecuadorian Embassy since Assange’s arrival, which cost a total of 5.3 million pounds ($8.3 million) between June 2012 and December 2013. According to data released by the MET Police, around 900,000 pounds ($1.5 million) were paid out in overtime wages to officers.

If Assange stays in the Embassy building until 2022 – when the statute of limitations on his extradition request expires – it could cost the London police about 36.5 million pounds ($60 million), reports the Huffington Post UK.

Assange has essentially been imprisoned in the Ecuadorian Embassy as UK police have resolved to arrest him and extradite him should he set foot outside the building. Moreover, Assange believes that once in Sweden, the authorities would hand him over to the US, where he could potentially be tried for espionage in connection with the thousands of classified diplomatic cables divulged by WikiLeaks.

At the beginning of this month Swedish MPs urged prosecutors to visit Assange’s de facto home in Ecuador’s London embassy to question him, arguing that the whistleblower will not come to Sweden voluntarily.

"It is in the interest of everyone involved in this process that the prosecutor reaches a conclusion to either file charges or dismiss the case, and it is obvious that Assange will not come to Sweden," Staffan Danielsson, from the Center Party, said in a statement.

However, Swedish prosecutors have criticized MPs for overstepping the mark and interfering in the course of justice.

"The fact that an MP openly questions a prosecutor's decision- making in an individual case is remarkable," said Anders Perklev, the Swedish Prosecutor-General. "It violates the foundation of power division between the legislative and the executive authorities in Sweden."

Assange has been accused of rape by one woman and charges of sexual assault by another in connection with a trip to Sweden in 2010. The whistleblower denies the charges against him.

A Florida woman who has been living “off the grid” for more than a year will be forced to partially plug in or face consequences from the city, a special magistrate ruled last week.

In December, Robin Speronis became engaged in a dispute with the city of Cape Coral for her refusal to use modern amenities such as running water and electricity. A code enforcement officer at the time visited her home and deemed it as “uninhabitable property,” reports The Blaze.

“I was exercising my First Amendment rights of free speech in discussing living off the grid,” Speronis said in December.

In addition, her alternative source of energy must be approved by the city. The city contends that using rainwater and solar energy violates the International Property Maintenance Code. 

Translation - You need the permission of Big Brother to use the sun and rain that God gave us all.

The legal system, however, did not agree with her assessment of the situation on Thursday.

The magistrate ruled she was guilty of not being hooked up to a proper water supply, WBBH-TV reported. She was acquitted, however, of not having a proper sewer and electrical system.

“I’m choosing to live without being dependent on the system,” Speronis said.

She now has a month to comply and make the changes deemed necessary by the city, though vowed she won’t do it, WBBH-TV reported.

For her part, Speronis said she does not intend to hook up to the city’s water system, vowing to appeal the Magistrate’s ruling.

“I know how to live off the grid completely and in a sanitary way,” Speronis said in response to the city’s action, according to The News-Press. “That’s what seven months living in the woods taught me. I do have an alternative toilet from my days of living in the woods,” reports RT News.

The Cape Coral resident said she will dispose of waste just as dog owners do for pets. She also plans to collect wastewater in containers for use in her garden.

Speronis already collects rainwater for bathing and other uses, all while generating electricity with solar panels.

“I don’t have to justify my life. They have to. That’s the way our system of justice works. They have justify it. I don’t” Speronis said.

Recently the town of National City disapproved of a sign displayed at the National City store location and told the store, “Take down the sign or go to jail. We do not approve of guns…or you.”

The store has been in compliance with the law and was not doing anything illegal. So why is there a fuss? It’s because of the guns and the message of freedom being promoted by Ares Armor.

Prior to the city speaking to him about the sign, Dimitri says that a uniformed officer stopped by and took pictures from outside. Dimitri’s neighbor told him that the city didn’t like what they had on their sign, a picture of an AR-15. Notice that the issue was not the sign itself. It was not its dimensions or it being obstructive, but its message.

Dimitri told Freedom Outpost that he invited officers to the store to take pictures and ask questions, which they did. One officer even put his career on the line by telling Dimitri how the city viewed the sign, according to Dimitri.

What happened following the visit by the officer is that Ares Armor received a letter from the city threatening fines and jail time until the sign was removed.

Ares Armor confirmed with Freedom Outpost that the AR-15 sign was merely a replacement of a previous sign, but not an entirely new sign. The sign had been erected for some time and displayed a banner from another tenant in the same building.

Dimitri says that National City is “putting off the vibe” that they want him and his store to pack up and leave. So far, Ares Armor has spent $10,000 in the appeals process seeking justice from what appears to be a tyrannical city that doesn’t seem to respect the Second Amendment.

This is why we need alternative information sources of the type CIN appears intended to eradicate. You cannot rely on the central pillars of the information establishment to report anything that does not advance the hard left agenda.

This could go down as election 2014's biggest flub, a Todd Aitken type of mistake. 

To recap, a libertarian group, Americans For Prosperity is running an ad in Michigan portraying a middle-class mom stricken with cancer, on camera talking about how Obamacare has made access to doctors, and ability to afford prescription medicine much more difficult.

So the Democrats’ thugs are trying to silence Mrs. Boonstra. Contemptibly, the Obama administration’s lawyers have threatened to use the Democrat-dominated Federal Communications Commission to take away the licenses of television stations that run the AFP ad:

You have an obligation “to protect the public from false, misleading or deceptive advertising.” Licensee Responsibility With Respect to the Broadcast of False, Misleading or Deceptive Advertising, 74 F.C.C.2d 623 (1961). Failure to prevent the airing of “false and misleading advertising” may be “probative of an underlying abdication of licensee responsibility” that can be cause for the loss of a station’s license. In other words: Nice television station you’ve got here. Shame if anything should happen to it.

The most likely outcome here, is that Peters and the Democrats will back off. The station will most likely continue running the ad. But in public opinion in Michigan it could be an entirely different matter.

It takes her two uncertain, sleep-deprived months to replace her plan, with Obamacare delaying every step of the way through its broken website, weeks of snail-mail delays and days of backed up phone lines. 

Ms. Boostra finally ended up with a plan she doesn’t think is even comparable to the security of her old plan. And when she told her story, Mr. Peters, the politician who wants to be her senator — and represent her in Washington — sicced his lawyers on her, questioning her trials and, in a page right out of Richard Nixon’s playbook, threatening the license of the station that dared to air it. Right on! How does this look to your average Michigan voter, say an independent who votes occasionally for Democrats, other times for the GOP? How does this look to the all-important single mom voter in Michigan who typically sides with Democrats? It's still in its early stages, but a week or two from now, we could be calling Democrat Gary Peters the Todd Aitken of 2014.

And as we've mentioned repeatedly here at LR, we Republicans do not need this seat to win the Senate. This is gravy. The GOP looks to already have enough seats to secure the majority. Republican Senator Terri Lynn Land from blue state Michigan, will just be the ultimate icing on the cake.

The Washington Times reports that the unelected Federal Communications Commission finds itself on the defensive over a proposed research project that critics say directly threatens First Amendment protections for the news media.

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, in a Feb. 14 letter to congressional Republicans made public Thursday, defended the agency’s proposed “Multi-Market Study of Critical Information Needs” as part of its mandate to “promote the policies and purpose … favoring diversity of media voices.

The FCC contract proposal calls for government investigators to explore the process by which stories are selected, as well as perceived bias at individual stations and perceived responsiveness by reporters and editors to “underserved” populations.
 

The prospect of a government agency monitoring newsgathering decisions and editorial control has infuriated some critics and even sparked a public condemnation from one of the Republican appointees to the FCC itself.

The FCC is in charge of granting operating licenses to radio and broadcast stations, and the new data could influence their decisions whose license is renewed in years to come.

“They could sit down at the end of the licensing period and say you only had 25 percent of the stories that were positive about government, and they could pull licenses because they think the stories are biased,” he added.

Many critics have blasted the new study, saying that the study is a blatant affront to constitutional first amendment freedom of press protections.

House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton, Michigan Republican, and 15 GOP members of the committee wrote a blistering letter to Wheeler in December after learning of the FCC’s proposed study.

“It is wrong, it is unconstitutional, and we urge you to put a stop to this most recent attempt to engage the FCC as the ‘news police,’” they wrote.

"Corruptus in Extremis"  -  Marine Corps leaders have ordered the independent Marine Corps Times newspaper removed from its prominent newsstand location at base exchange stores worldwide and placed instead in areas away from checkout lines, where it is harder to find and fewer copies are available.

The move raises troubling questions about motive and closely follows a directive prohibiting commanders from using budget funds to buy Marine Corps Times and a number of other publications.

Marine Corps Times is widely recognized for its comprehensive coverage of the Corps, focusing on everything from career tracks, to pay and benefits, family and spouse issues, and employment after leaving the military reports the Marine Corps Times.

Throughout much of the past year, the paper has published dozens of articles as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations the service’s commandant, Gen. Jim Amos, abused his authority to ensure Marines were punished for an embarrassing war-zone scandal. Numerous reports have captured the attention of mainstream media outlets, including NPR, CNN and Time magazine, among several others.

print stories critical of General Jim Amos, Commandant of the Marine Corps.

Spokesmen for the commandant’s office would not answer questions about whether Amos or his staff were aware of or involved in the decision to relocate the newspaper, but a source with knowledge of the new directive said it was approved with the commandant’s knowledge.

“It is no secret [in the Pentagon] that the commandant does not like Marine Corps Times,” the source said, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

The commandant’s office punted all questions, including whether Amos was involved in the decision to move Marine Corps Times from prominent display in the exchanges, to Manpower & Reserve Affairs, which has oversight of the exchange. A spokeswoman for Manpower & Reserve Affairs said the paper was moved as part of a plan to “professionalize” the front of the exchanges.

Fiscal guidance for 2014, issued Oct. 22, specifically prohibits commands from using operations and maintenance funds for purchasing subscriptions to Marine Corps Times, which is part of the Military Times network and owned by Gannett, one of the world’s largest media corporations.

The order to move the paper from checkout areas came six weeks later. Distributors were given a variety of reasons. One was told it was due to business performance, though the paper is one of, if not the top-selling publications in Marine Corps exchanges.

Officials at Marine Corps Community Services and the Semper Fit and Exchange Services Division did not respond to multiple requests for sales data. However, information provided by Army and Air Force Exchange Services shows that Army Times and Air Force Times — Marine Corps Times’ sister publications — outsell the next publication 10-to-1.

by the Corps is an act of dishonor and corruption.

“For any retailer to hide one of its best-selling products is just bad business. It obviously will hurt our newsstand sales, but it also hurts revenues to the Exchange,” said Peter Lundquist, Military Times’ vice president and general manager. “But I’m told this isn’t about business. Marine Corps Times helps Marines and their families stay informed about their service and their livelihood. We believe our independence is an asset to Marines. By what standard is Marine Corps Times not professionally oriented reading material, and who is setting that standard for Marines?”

Cindy Whitman Lacy, chief operating officer and deputy director of business operations for the Marine Corps’ Semper Fit and Exchange Services Division, offered another explanation to the head of circulation for Military Times. Marine Corps Times, she said, is not consistent with the Marine Corps “brand.”

While a provided statement said Lt. Gen. Robert Milstead, deputy commandant for Manpower & Reserve Affairs, “directed” the change, it does not say who made the decision.

Milstead “directed the Semper Fit and Exchange Services Division to determine how to professionalize the front areas of our stores,” Maj. Shawn Haney, spokeswoman for Manpower & Reserve Affairs, said in the statement. “As a result, the store entry merchandising strategy was reviewed and new directives were issued on how and where publications are to be displayed.”

Marine officials did not respond when asked if this meant Marine Corps Times is viewed as unprofessional.

• True the Vote Founder Catherine Engelbrecht says the IRS and FBI targeted her because of her political beliefs with fifteen visits from four federal agencies in a span of two years.

The American Police State  -  The founder of a nonprofit group that focuses on election integrity said that she – and her family businesses – were targeted by the IRS and the federal government because of her political beliefs.

Testifying before a House Oversight and Government Reform Subcommittee on Regulatory Affairs hearing on Thursday to discuss the IRS's targeting of conservatives, Catherine Engelbrecht, the founder of True the Vote, was asked by Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) why, "deep down," she believed she had fifteen visits from four federal agencies in a span of two years after her group applied for tax-exempt status with the IRS in 2010 reports Breitbart News.

"I think I was targeted because of my political beliefs," Engelbrecht told Jordan.

Jordan then replied that he believed Engelbrecht was targeted because of her conservative beliefs and because her group was effective at educating voters about free and fair elections, and had been praised by state attorneys general for cleaning up voter rolls, monitoring election fraud, and even engaging in outreach to Hispanic Americans.

"They targeted you because it was working," Jordan said. "They said, 'We can't have this. Here's a conservative who is making an impact.' That's why you were targeted."

In a previous interview with Breitbart News, Engelbrecht described her experiences with the IRS since her group applied for tax-exempt status in 2010:

We applied for nonprofit C-3 status early in 2010. Since that time the IRS has run us through a gauntlet of analysts and hundreds of questions over and over again. They’ve requested to see each and every tweet I’ve ever tweeted or Facebook post I’ve ever posted. They also asked to know every place I’ve ever spoken since our inception and to whom, and everywhere I intend to speak in the future.

As Breitbart News also reported, True the Vote's application for tax-exempt status started the left's war on Engelbrecht and her organization and also "triggered aggressive audits of one of her family’s personal businesses as well." Engelbrecht's business had never been visited by the federal government before:

The FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) began a series of inquiries about her and her group; the BATF (Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms) began demanding to see her family's firearms in surprise audits of her and her husband’s small gun dealership – which had done less than $200 in sales; OSHA (Occupational Safety Hazards Administration) began a surprise audit of their small family manufacturing business; and the EPA-affiliated TCEQ (Texas Commission on Environment Quality) did a surprise visit and audit due to “a complaint being called in.”

Jordan then said it was outrageous that the IRS was asking Engelbrecht and other Tea Party leaders about their "political connections" when the person investigating the IRS's targeting of Tea Party groups donated to President Barack Obama's campaign. Barbara Bosserman, a trial attorney within the IRS's Civil Rights Commission who maxed out donations to the Obama campaign, is leading the investigation, and Jordan mentioned that less than one tenth of one percent of Americans have maxed out to a political candidate.

"If that's not irony, I don't know what is," Jordan said.

• Leftist Loons in Campbell, Wisconsin are directly attacking the 1st Amendment rights of anti-Obama protesters to free speech.  They’ve enacted a ban to prevent a Conservative group from gathering on a pedestrian bridge where the public would be able to see their message.

Two tea party protesters have sued the town of Campbell in federal court challenging an ordinance that prohibits signs on a pedestrian bridge across Interstate 90.

The suit, filed in U.S. District Court on behalf of Greg Luce and Nicholas Newman, names the town as well as police Chief Tim Kelemen and Officer Nathan Casper.



The ordinance, passed in October, violates Luce and Newman’s rights to free speech and free assembly, their attorneys argue in the complaint. The plaintiffs also are seeking a temporary injunction to stop enforcement of the ordinance reports the La Crosse Tribune.

Tea party supporters first used the overpass on Aug. 6 as part of a national movement calling for the impeachment of President Barack Obama. Citing public safety, the town board passed two ordinances banning the display of “signs, flags, banners, pennants, streamers, balloons” within 100 feet of the bridge.

Four protesters received $132.90 citations for holding flags and a large wooden cross on the overpass during a Dec. 8 protest.

According to the complaint, Luce took part in an Oct. 24 demonstration in which protesters wore T-shirts that together spelled “IMPEACH” on one side and “OBAMA” on the other. He left when threatened with citation by police.

Newman stood on the overpass three days later holding an American flag and was issued a ticket for violating the ordinance.

Erin Mersino, trial counsel for the nonprofit Thomas More Law Center, which supports “America’s Judeo-Christian heritage and moral values,” said the ordinance in effect bans the expression of ideas in what would traditionally be a public forum — a sidewalk.

“It’s amazing that the government has overreached in this fashion,” she said.

Alan Dershowitz may be phasing out his days as a Harvard law professor. But that doesn’t mean he’s stepping off the pedestal.

His latest topic of concern: Dinesh D’Souza.  Dershowitz thinks the federal campaign fraud charges against the conservative filmmaker and author are an example of “selective prosecution.”

Weighing in on the case Friday in an interview with Law Blog, Dershowitz was withering in his opinion of the Manhattan U.S. attorney office’s prosecution of D’Souza, who pleaded not guilty last week to making illegal campaign contributions to a Republican U.S. Senate candidate in 2012 reports the Wall Street Journal.

“The idea of charging him with a felony for this doesn’t sound like a proper exercise of prosecutorial discretion,”  Dershowitz said. “I can’t help but think that [D'Souza's] politics have something to do with it. . . . It smacks of selective prosecution.”

The professor, though, said he has a high regard for Manhattan U.S. attorney Preet Bharara, whose office under his watch has won corruption convictions against nearly a dozen Democratic lawmakers in New York. “I’m a big of supporter. I think he’s doing a great job, but this is a mistake,”  Dershowitz said.

A spokesperson for Bharara’s office did not have an immediate comment.

D’Souza’s polemical 2012 film “2016: Obama’s America” — which is highly critical of the nation’s Democratic president — ranks among the highest grossing documentaries of all time.

In a famously left-leaning Hollywood, where Democratic fund-raisers fill the social calendar, Friends of Abe stands out as a conservative group that bucks the prevailing political winds.

A collection of perhaps 1,500 right-leaning players in the entertainment industry, Friends of Abe keeps a low profile and fiercely protects its membership list, to avoid what it presumes would result in a sort of 21st-century blacklist, albeit on the other side of the partisan spectrum.

 

Now the Internal Revenue Service is reviewing the group’s activities in connection with its application for tax-exempt status. Last week, federal tax authorities presented the group with a 10-point request for detailed information about its meetings with politicians like Paul D. Ryan, Thaddeus McCotter and Herman Cain, among other matters, according to people briefed on the inquiry reports the New York Times.

The people spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the organization’s confidentiality strictures, and to avoid complicating discussions with the I.R.S.

Those people said that the application had been under review for roughly two years, and had at one point included a demand — which was not met — for enhanced access to the group’s security-protected website, which would have revealed member names.

Tax experts said that an organization’s membership list is information that would not typically be required. The I.R.S. already had access to the site’s basic levels, a request it considers routine for applications for 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.

 

Friends of Abe — the name refers to Abraham Lincoln — has strongly discouraged the naming of its members.

 

That policy even prohibits the use of cameras at group events, to avoid the unwilling identification of all but a few associates — the actors Gary Sinise, Jon Voight and Kelsey Grammer, or the writer-producer Lionel Chetwynd, for instance — who have spoken openly about their conservative political views.

Jeremy Boreing, executive director of Friends of Abe, declined on Wednesday to discuss details of the tax review, but said the group would continue regardless of outcome.

 

“Certainly, it’s been a long process,” he said.

 

“Friends of Abe has absolutely no political agenda,” he added. “It exists to create fellowship among like-minded individuals.”
