The exercise gave students a chance to learn about an unfamiliar culture and religion. But in a school community where no students and only one teacher outwardly practice Islam, wearing the scarves was a good way to draw curious looks, questions and a few unfriendly comments.

“A few unfriendly comments.” What exactly? That they look silly? Well, they do.

More victimhood, more dawah, more proselytizing in our public schools. We never see this done  with Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, etc., but we see it with this ideology. This propaganda is shoved down our throats and our children’s throats, an ideology  that has done more harm and destruction to this country in the 21st century than any other on the face of the earth.

Where are the school lessons on the 1,400 years of jihadi wars, land appropriations, cultural annihilations and enslavements? Where are the women studies programs on the misogyny inherent in Islam — honor killings, child marriage, forced marriage, women as property? Parents must stop this inculcation in our public schools by idiot teachers.

Maybe more than any other, high school can be a time when what you choose to wear has a huge impact on your sense of identity.

As students take their first steps into adulthood, they walk a fine line between fitting in with their peers and developing a unique sense of self.

Earlier this fall, a group of AP language students at Brighton High School were asked to read a memoir by Iranian author Azar Nafisi. The book detailed the experiences of women during that country’s religious revolution, including dealing with new standards of modesty in the way they dressed.

To experience the material first-hand, several girls in the class in Brighton chose to spend a full school day wearing hijabs, the head-scarves worn by Muslim women in many parts of the world.

The exercise gave students a chance to learn about an unfamiliar culture and religion. But in a school community where no students and only one teacher outwardly practice Islam, wearing the scarves was a good way to draw curious looks, questions and a few unfriendly comments.

Qahera, the Arabic word for ‘Cairo’, is on a mission to combat “misogyny and Islamophobia, among other things,” said 19-year-old comic designer Deena Mohamed, whose work is presented in Arabic and English.

The name Cairo “has so many strong meanings, like ‘vanquisher’ and ‘conqueror.’ It seemed appropriate for a superhero,” Mohamed said in Albawaba News.

“It seemed only natural for her to combat sexual harassment in Egypt, because she mostly deals with issues that frustrate me, and this was a significant one that needed to be addressed,” Mohamed added.

She made Qahera veiled “because she combats Islamophobia that veiled women face to a large extent due to being very recognizably Muslim, and because there’s already such little representation of women in hijabs that isn’t dehumanizing.”

Women's Rights and Freedom of Religion make Tunisia

one of the most progressive in the Arab world.

After decades of dictatorship and two years of arguments and compromises, Tunisians on Sunday finally have a new constitution laying the foundations for a new democracy.

The document is groundbreaking as one of the most progressive constitutions in the Arab world — and for the fact that it got written at all. It passed late Sunday by 200 votes out of 216 in the Muslim Mediterranean country that inspired uprisings across the region after overthrowing a dictator in 2011.

"This constitution, without being perfect, is one of consensus," assembly speaker Mustapha Ben Jaafar said after the vote. "We had today a new rendezvous with history to build a democracy founded on rights and equality," reports the Associated Press.

The constitution enshrining freedom of religion and women's rights took two years to finish. During that period, the country was battered by high unemployment, protests, terrorist attacks, political assassinations and politicians who seemed more interested in posturing than finishing the charter.

The new constitution sets out to make the North African country of 11 million people a democracy, with a civil state whose laws are not based on Islamic law, unlike many other Arab constitutions. An entire chapter of the document, some 28 articles, is dedicated to protecting citizens' rights, including protection from torture, the right to due process, and freedom of worship. It guarantees equality between men and women before the law and the state commits itself to protecting women's rights.

"This is the real revolution, many democratic constitution don't even have that," said Yahyaoui. "It will have a real impact on the rest of the Arab region, because finally we can say that women's rights are not a Western concept only, but also exist in Tunisia."

Tunisia has always had the most progressive legislation on women's rights in the Arab world and Yahyaoui believes the long period of writing has made people comfortable with its contents.

One of the most hotly debated articles guarantees "freedom of belief and conscience," which would permit atheism and the practice of non-Abrahamic religions frowned upon in other Islamic countries.

It also bans incitement to violence and declaring a Muslim an apostate — a fallen Muslim — which leaves them open to death threats. In response, conservative law makers insisted that "attacks on the sacred" be forbidden, which many see as a threat to freedom of expression.

Constitutional scholar Slim Loghmani said despite some drawbacks, the constitution is an "historic compromise between identity and modernity" that can serve as a model for other countries in the region seeking a balance between an Arab-Islamic heritage and contemporary ideas of human rights and good governance.

"It's a step forward in the nagging question of cultural identity in Arab countries," he said, lauding in particular not just freedom of religion but what he calls the freedom "not to have a religion."

A Nova Scotia, Canada high school student is asserting she was reduced to “second-class citizenship” after her Halifax aikido school followed provincial human rights law and accommodated a male student’s religious request not to touch his female classmates.

“I felt degraded, discriminated against, I felt like a woman in the 1950s,” said Sonja Power, 17, a former student at Halifax’s East Coast Yoshinkan Aikido, a school operated out of the city’s Lakeside Community Centre. “We wouldn’t allow someone using their religion to discriminate against someone’s race, so why would they use it to discriminate against somebody’s gender?”

Ms. Power, a resident of the Halifax suburb of Upper Tantallon, NS, had been a student at East Coast Yoshinkan since the age of six reports the National Post.

In the spring of 2012, Ms. Power, then 15, was just on the verge of earning her aikido black belt when she said a man enrolled at the school and told its owner that, for reasons of his Islamic faith, he was not allowed physical contact with women.

The request would not have been noticed in a pottery class or a fencing course, but Aikido — like any martial art — is uniquely physical. The ultimate effect, said Ms. Power, was that sessions were suddenly being divvied up by sex.

The school’s sensei (teacher), “would put all the women on one side and then offer a side for the Muslim man so there wouldn’t be any problems,” she said.

And when it came time for the customary end-of-class handshakes, “he would shake hands with all the other men in the dojo, but he wouldn’t even come over and look at the women … he just ignored us,” said Ms. Power.

The man also refused to bow, apparently telling the dojo’s sensei that he only bowed to Allah.

Bowing is a big part of the Japanese martial art, and aikido students are expected to regularly bow to classmates, the sensei and the front wall of the dojo, which is traditionally adorned with portraits of aikido’s pioneers.

Along with her mother, Ms. Power said she approached the sensei with her concerns about the new environment, but was told that it was the student’s religious right. “[The sensei] told us to get used to it,” said Michele Walsh, Ms. Power’ mother.

Aiming to complete her training, Ms. Power nevertheless stayed in the school for another five months, but said her breaking point came when the male student began distributing religious literature.

In July of 2012, said Ms. Power, the student handed out copies of Islam; From darkness to light a booklet written by Toronto-based Islamic author Suhail Kapoor.

Several passages stuck out for the 15-year-old. “[When] a woman chooses to show her body in one form or another, the message is only one: she wants attention and possibly much more,” it reads. The booklet also authorizes husbands to administer a “light strike” to their wives in cases of “serious moral misconduct.”

“I couldn’t go to the same dojo with someone who thinks that way,” said Ms. Power.

“I thought why would someone’s religion — something that they choose to follow — trump my gender, which is something that I was born with?”

The decision was supported by both the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission and the Halifax Recreation Administration, which operates Lakeside Community Centre.

Hindus have been falling victim to rape, arson and vandalism allegedly at the hands of Jamaat-Shibir and BNP men for the past few weeks surrounding the January 5 national elections.

Since Saturday night, a temple was torched in Tangail, a Hindu man killed in Natore, three Hindu men beaten up in Patuakhali and a straw heap belonging to a Hindu was set ablaze in Jhalakathi.

Meanwhile, the raped women of Jessore's Rishipara and their families have fled their homes fearing further attacks, while male members of the community in different parts of the country are spending sleepless nights, taking turns guarding their villages.

Though a police camp has been set up and local youths are patrolling the village at night, Hindu villagers are hardly assured of their safety.

"I have sent my daughter-in-law to her father's house. Though police are patrolling the village, we are scared," said Sandhya Rani Das of Rishipara.

Families of both the rape victims have fled the village apprehending more attacks.

"The car of an influential person of this area was burnt down by anti-election activists. None has been arrested following the incident. Compared to him, we are insignificant people. The same gang that torched his car raped my wife too. So, what justice can we expect? It is wise to leave the village silently," said the husband of one of the rape victims.

A car belonging to Humayun Sultan Sadap, son of AL lawmaker Khan Tipu Sultan, was torched at Rishipara on December 29 while he was campaigning for his father. Police have failed to arrest anyone in this connection.

In Tangail, miscreants burnt a Kali temple to ashes at Phulbari village of Kalihati district in the early hours yesterday.

George Town, Malaysia  -  A mother of two and an eight-month pregnant woman were among 19 Muslim couples detained here by Penang Religious Department for committing khalwat (close proximity) on New Year Day.

The pre-dawn raid was carried out from 2am on several budget hotels in Sebarang Perai and Timur Laut districts from Department's chief enforcement officer Khairul Azman Azizan said the 29-year-old mother had taken her two children, aged between three and six year-old, to the hotel room to be with her boyfriend.

“They tried to pass themselves off as married couple but checks revealed they were not married,” he said.

Khairul said they also detained an eight-month pregnant woman with her boyfriend after they failed to prove that they were married.

He said those detained were in their 20s to 40s and included students from the local higher learning institutions.

Outraged protesters burned photos of President Obama outside the US Embassy in New Delhi on Wednesday over the arrest and strip-search of an Indian diplomat in New York for allegedly mistreating her nanny.

The demonstrators cheered the Indian government’s sanctions against the US over the arrest of Devyani Khobragade, 39, which included the removal of concrete security barriers outside the embassy and a threatened crackdown on US diplomats.

“It was very good that the government removed the barriers yesterday. Until the USA says sorry, we should not give any security at all to the Americans,” cried Gaurav Khattar, 33, one of about three dozen protesters, some wearing masks mocking Obama and sarongs made from US flags reports the New York Post.

“Humiliating Woman Diplomats … Is it American Culture?” read one banner held by several women.

Also Wednesday, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said Khobragade would soon return to India following her transfer to India’s permanent mission to the UN, a move that could make her eligible for full diplomatic immunity.

“We will bring back the woman diplomat arrested in New York and restore her dignity. It is my responsibility,” Khurshid said according Indian.

“We strongly condemn the treatment meted out to the diplomat in New York. India is not over-reacting to the treatment to its diplomat by US. The nation must speak in one voice,” he said.

The lower house of Parliament was temporarily adjourned after furious lawmakers demanded that it adopt a resolution against the US over the treatment of Khobragade, who was strip- and cavity-searched and swabbed for DNA while in US custody.

Arun Jaitely, leader of the opposition in Parliament’s upper house, said the government had to register its “strongest protest” to the US government for the “lack of respect for India.”

The government stripped US diplomats of privileges – such as access to duty-free booze – and even threatened to boot the domestic partners of gay US diplomats, citing a new law making homosexuality illegal in the South Asian country.

Khobragade, a deputy consul general at the Indian Consulate in New York, was busted Dec. 12 on charges of visa fraud and underpaying her housekeeper, an Indian national. She is free after posting $250,000 bail.

She is accused of lying to get her nanny into the States and then paying her $3.31 an hour.

In an emotional email to colleagues, Khobragade complained of being held in a cell with petty criminals despite her repeated claims of diplomatic immunity.

“I broke down many times as the indignities of repeated handcuffing, stripping and cavity searches, swabbing, in a holdup with common criminals and drug addicts were all being imposed upon me,” she wrote in the email.

“I got the strength to regain composure and remain dignified thinking that I must represent all of my colleagues and my country with confidence and pride.”

Fatwa - A woman who swims is an “Adulteress,” Touching Bananas is against Allah

As the full ramification of the Muslim Brotherhood’s year in power continues to be exposed, a new study by Al Azhar’s Fatwa Committee dedicated to exploring the fatwas, or Islamic decrees, issued by the Brotherhood and Salafis — the Islamists — was recently published.

Al Azhar, in Cairo, is considered by many to be one of the oldest and most prestigious Islamic universities in the world. The study, written by Al Azhar’s Dr. Sayed Zayed, and entitled (in translation), “The Misguided Fatwas of the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafis,” reveals a great deal about how Islamists view women.

The Egyptian newspaper Al Masry Al Youm summarized some of the Al Azhar study’s main findings and assertions on November 15 in a article entitled (in translation), “Muslim Brotherhood fatwas: A woman swimming is an ‘adulteress’ and touching bananas is ‘forbidden,’” reports the Gatestone Institute.

Fatwas also forbade women from eating certain vegetables or even
touching cucumbers or bananas due to their phallic imagery.

According to the report, “fatwas issued by both groups [Brotherhood and Salafis] regard women as strange creatures created solely for sex. They considered the voices of women, their looks and presence outside the walls of their homes an ‘offence.’ Some went as far as to consider women as a whole ‘offensive.’”

The study addressed 51 fatwas issued during the rule of ousted president Mohamed Morsi. Among them, the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafis “permitted wives to lie to their husbands concerning politics,” if the husband forbids her from being supportive of the Islamists or their agenda; she may then, through taqiyya [dissimulation] — a Muslim doctrine that permits deceit to empower Islam — still be supportive of the Islamists while pretending to be against them.

The study similarly revealed that some of these fatwas decreed that women who swim in the sea are committing "adultery" -- even if they wear a hijab: "The reason behind this particular fatwa, from their point of view, is that the sea is masculine [as with many other languages, Arabic nouns are gender specific, and "sea" is masculine], and when the water touches the woman's private parts she becomes an 'adulteress' and should be punished."

Moreover, "Some of these fatwas also forbade women from eating certain vegetables or even touching cucumbers or bananas," due to their phallic imagery, which may tempt women to deviate.

Other fatwas decreed that "it is unacceptable for women to turn the air conditioning on at home during the absence of their husbands as this could be used as a sign to indicate to neighbors that the woman is at home alone and any of them could commit adultery with her."

One fatwa suggested that marriage to ten-year-old girls should be allowed to prevent girls "from deviating from the right path," while another prohibited girls from going to schools located 25 kilometers away from their homes.

Another stated that a marriage is annulled if the husband and wife copulate with no clothes on.
