Republican Garry Cobb Steps Up

• Democrat Rob Andrews just resigned and is the subject of a House Ethics Committee investigation regarding the use of campaign funds from his leadership PAC to take trips to Scotland and Los Angeles and regarding allegations of using a graduation party for his daughter to collect campaign funds.

Reaching for some star power, New Jersey Republicans have once again recruited a former Philadelphia Eagle to run for Congress.

Former Eagles linebacker Garry Cobb will seek the state's 1st Congressional District seat being vacated by Democratic U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews, according to Camden County GOP chairman Thomas Booth.

Cobb had an 11-year career in the NFL and found a home in Philadelphia, where he was a linebacker for the Eagles and then a radio sports talk personality. Cobb lives in Cherry Hill, and Booth said the party is excited to be backing Cobb reports Newsworks.

"It's certainly a great opportunity to take back this congressional seat as what it truly should be, which is the people's seat," Booth said in a telephone interview.

Booth clearly hopes to contrast Cobb's grass-roots appeal with the expected Democratic candidate, state Sen. Donald Norcross.

"You now have a Democrat candidate who is part of the political elite in South Jersey and is an integral cog in the South Jersey Democratic machine," Booth said.

Donald Norcross is the brother of longtime South Jersey political powerbroker George Norcross, who's a major player in higher education and health care in the area. He's also a part owner of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News.

While Cobb will get some attention, it won't be an easy district for him to run in.

Nick Acocella, the editor of Politifax New Jersey, said the state's congressional districts are drawn to protect the incumbent party. In the 1st District, that's the Democrats.

"The district is so overwhelmingly Democratic that I probably wasn't born the last time a Republican carried it," he said. "No Republican has gotten more than 35 percent of the vote in that district since 1990."

This is the second time in recent years New Jersey Republicans have recruited a former Eagle to make a run at Congress. Former lineman Jon Runyan held the state's 3rd Congressional District seat for two terms, but decided not to seek re-election this year.

• T.W. Shannon, the GOP Speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives, is forming an exploratory committee for seeking the U.S. Senate seat to be vacated by Dr. Tom Coburn. As things are shaping up, and it's still quite early in the process, he would likely be the Tea Party candidate in the Republican primary.
• Speaker Shannon is an African-American and a member of the Chickasaw Nation. His roots with the Chickasaw go back to the removal of the tribe from Mississippi to Oklahoma in 1837.

Republican Oklahoma House Speaker T.W. Shannon is forming an exploratory committee to look more closely at a potential run in the special election for retiring Sen. Tom Coburn’s (R-Okla.) seat, multiple sources tell The Hill.

Shannon’s office declined to comment, but sources say he's now expected to run.
One source tells The Hill  Shannon has received dozens of calls from supporters “very enthusiastically encouraging him to run” since Coburn’s announcement last week that he’ll retire at the end of the year.

Shannon would run as a conservative alternative to Rep. James Lankford (R-Okla.), who entered the race Monday to considerable pushback from conservative groups.

"We have reviewed his record and it's clear that conservatives cannot count on him to fight for their principles,” Senate Conservatives Fund Executive Director Matt Hoskins said in a statement after Lankford announced.

That group endorsed Rep. Jim Bridenstine (R-Okla.) for reelection and urged him to run for Senate last year. Bridenstine would likely get the support of most of those deep-pocketed national conservative groups if he ran.

But with Shannon in the race, Bridenstine wouldn’t be guaranteed to pick up the anti-Lankford mantle, and the two run the risk of splitting the conservative vote and giving Lankford an opening to take the primary.

More likely, observers say, is for the primary to head to a runoff, where Lankford and an alternative candidate would face off.

Shannon’s supporters believe he could have a shot at making it to the runoff because he’s got the strong political ties within Oklahoma that Bridenstine lacks, and the state House speaker has also been a stronger fundraiser than the congressman. Shannon has raised his profile within the state over the past year, as he was named one of the Republican National Committee’s “Rising Stars.”

Sources close to Bridenstine say he hasn’t yet made his decision, and it ultimately wouldn’t be based on what any other candidate does.

Matheson's Retirement Gives Mia Love's Campaign Edge


Utah Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson unexpectedly bowed out Tuesday from another run for the House, a decision that gives rising Republican star Mia Love an edge in the 2014 race. "I just never saw me doing this all my life," Matheson told the Salt Lake Tribune Tuesday. 

"I always thought there would be other chapters in what I do in my public service career and this just seemed the right time to move on to the next opportunity." 

Love, a Saratoga Springs mayor who rose to prominence with a prime speaking role at the 2012 Republican National Convention, was gearing up for a competitive rematch against the seven-term incumbent, the state's only Democratic congressman.

Additionally: The 53-year-old Matheson, son of former Utah Gov. Scott Matheson, first ran for Congress in 1999 and has held onto the seat for seven terms in a largely red state. 

Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, tweeted that Matheson's announcement Tuesday was a political game changer.

Black Councilwoman says ‘Knockout game’ violence stems

from ‘genuine concern’ about Jewish influence.

The People's Republic of New York  -  A local Democrat New York City politician and ally of mayor-elect Bill de Blasio says the recent spate of “knockout” attacks in Brooklyn may stem from “a genuine concern” about Jewish influence.

Laurie Cumbo, the councilwoman-elect for the Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights, made the comments in an open letter posted to her Facebook page. In the letter, Cumbo reports that many of her African-American constituents are alarmed by the growth of the local Jewish community.

The resulting tension, she says, could have lead to a number of attacks on Jewish residents that bear the hallmarks of a “game” in which teens attempt to knock someone unconscious with one punch reports the Daily Caller.

“Many African American/Caribbean residents expressed a genuine concern that as the Jewish community continues to grow, they would be pushed out by their Jewish landlords or by Jewish families looking to purchase homes,” Cumbo wrote. ”I respect and appreciate the Jewish community’s family values and unity that has led to strong political, economic and cultural gains… While I personally regard this level of tenacity, I also recognize that for others, the accomplishments of the Jewish community triggers feelings of resentment, and a sense that Jewish success is not also their success.”

Like mayor-elect de Blasio, Cumbo hails from the resurgent left wing of the city’s Democratic Party. De Blasio, who once volunteered to assist the radical socialist Sandinista movement in Nicaragua, will be New York City’s first Democratic mayor in 20 years when he’s inaugurated next month.

White Dem Lt. Gov. nominee refuses to shake hands with Black GOP opponent

Virginia Lieutenant Governor candidate Ralph Northam (Socialist Democrat - VA) refused to shake hands with his Republican opponent, EW Jackson during an on-air appearance in Hampton Roads, VA last week. 

Jackson appeared on "Mornings on the Mall" on WMAL in Washington DC Monday morning and I asked him about the incident:

"It was insulting, but, on the other hand, I thought it was consistent with the way he behaves. Because, this spot he's been running, saying that I believe that a child born with birth defects is born that way because of their parents' sin is just a damnable, palpable, despicable lie. I don't believe that. I never said anything like that. And it's that kind of dishonesty that, to me, says this is not the kind of person that needs to be holding state-wide office. Not shaking my hand really just confirmed that. "

Dr. Alveda King—the niece of Martin Luther King, Jr. and one of America’s most prominent and respected civil rights leaders—said in a statement to Breitbart News:

I was saddened to learn today that Lt. Gov. candidate Ralph Northam refused to shake the hands of his opponent E.W. Jackson at the end of a television debate.  I am deeply burdened by the loss of civility in politics today. 

As one who has been elected to office as a Democratic Georgia State Representative, served as a Republican presidential appointee and who has often voted as an Independent, I have often said that we would all be better off without the political squabbles that tend to divide us. Refusing to shake hands with your opponent in front of a television audience takes the loss of civility to a new low. I would hope that his refusal to shake hands had nothing to do with the color of his opponent’s skin. 

In a troubled economy, people are looking for leaders who can bring everyone together to solve the problems that confront us all. It is my hope that in these last hours of the race, Ralph Northam will recognize his inappropriate behavior and offer an apology to E.W. Jackson and to all those he hopes to represent.

Dr. King’s reference to skin color is because Northam is white, while Jackson is African-American.

Ken Blackwell from the American Civil Rights Union—who has been elected to public office more than a dozen times and also received presidential appointments and Senate confirmations to several federal offices—also offered his reaction exclusively to Breitbart News, saying:

The Founders of the American republic understood that democracy only works when both sides can at least be civil to their opponents. Virginia voters need to decide if that disqualifies Ralph Northam from being lieutenant governor of the Old Dominion.
